General Summary of Position
Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or Patient Care Technician (PCT) the Nursing Assistant Apprentice performs delegated patient care activities in consideration with the developmental needs of each patient. Working alongside an RN CNA or PCT the Youth Apprentice participates in the delivery of age-appropriate patient care in a supportive learning environment. These activities may include simple specimen collection (e.g. urine) activities of daily living (ADLs) nutritional support patient mobility vital signs changing beds replenishing room supplies and assisting the healthcare team with specific treatments and/or procedures. The Apprentice in this position may perform all or a combination of the duties described depending upon the assigned work area and the specific needs of the patients and the department. These job functions must be completed under the supervision of an RN CNA or PCT.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Adheres to department policies procedures quality and safety standards and MedStar Health SPIRIT Values. Follows the supervision requirement when performing delegated tasks.
  • Assists patients with activities of daily living (ADLs) and daily personal hygiene including bathing mouth care dressing skin care positioning feeding ambulation toileting and range of motion activities. Assists with patient positioning and mobilization use of crutches and walkers and transfer/transport of patients in wheelchairs and stretchers.
  • Assists in the measurement and documentation of patients' intake and output (I&O). Accurately completes and records patient's vital signs height and weight abdominal girth head circumference pulse oximetry and other pertinent data or information in the patient's health record.
  • Assists in performing routine sterile non-sterile (e.g. application of thermal soaks) and other treatments/activities identified by Unit/Hospital policy inclusive of but not limited to simple specimen collection (e.g. urine stool) tube feedings Foley Catheter care perineal care turning and positioning simple dressing change postmortem care and transportation of body to the morgue.
  • Maintains the comfort privacy confidentiality and dignity of each patient in the delivery of services. Performs patient observation duty including 1:1 observation and safe application of restraints. Assists in preparing patients to be seen by providers and assists providers and RNs in patient examinations tests and procedures.
  • Rounds on assigned patients based on established standards (e.g. hourly purposeful rounding). Reports actual and potential problems concerning patients/families including changes in the patient's condition to the RN and other care team members as necessary. Initiates emergency interventions as appropriate and assists with CPR when indicated.
  • Responds to questions from patients families and visitors in a prompt courteous and respectful manner referring them to appropriate personnel if necessary. Consistently follows and implements established Policies and Procedures to ensure patient safety.
  • Maintains the cleanliness and safety of patient rooms/environment by distributing and changing linen and towels removing used meal trays checking bed siderails and safety restraints etc. Assists with environmental services support such as trash removal and cleaning patient rooms as needed.
  • Transports and/or escorts patients during discharges transfers and to/from medical appointments. Completes errands such as delivering specimens to the laboratory picking up equipment and supplies etc. as required.
  • Receives and stocks equipment and supplies and maintains orderly supply and utility rooms.

Minimal Qualifications
Education

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required

Experience

  • General health care experience in an acute care long-term care or other settings preferred. preferred

Licenses and Certifications

  • CNA - Certified Nursing Assistant from the state of Maryland within 180 Days required and
  • CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation within 90 Days required

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Basic math knowledge; verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills preferred.

This position has a hiring range of

USD $18.00 - USD $29.74 /Hr.
